What you will discover on your day trip Doñana and Aldea del Rocío from Seville or other cities

Located at the mouth of the Guadalquivir River, between the provinces of Seville, Cadiz, and Huelva, the Doñana National Park is undoubtedly the most important natural space in Europe.

A natural paradise of over 100,000 hectares, shaped by the action of air and water, where various ecosystems, although very different, are so interconnected and balanced that they practically would not be understood without each other.

Doñana is globally known as a breeding, migratory, and wintering ground for more than 300 different bird species, including the beautiful Spanish imperial eagle, one of the world’s most endangered species. In winter, large flocks of geese, cranes, or various species of ducks are easily seen. In summer, raptors such as the booted eagle or the black kite, spoonbills, and storks fill the park’s skies.

This variety and richness of birdlife are due to the proximity of the Strait of Gibraltar, the most important migratory route between Europe and Africa, and undoubtedly to Doñana’s most important ecosystem, the marshes. Some 35,000 hectares of virgin marsh and another 35,000 transformed by humans for their use, mainly marked by rice cultivation since the last century.

Another of the park’s most impressive and special ecosystems is the dunes and the beach, with over 50 kilometers of virgin coast bathed by the waters of the Atlantic Ocean. The coastal dunes form the most complex dune system in Europe, with up to six dune ridges and heights of eight to ten meters, where pine trees are enclosed, and some mammals such as deer, fallow deer, wild boars, or foxes roam.

The spectacular fossil dunes, in the southwest area of the park, which are lodged on the coast and form beautiful cliffs towards the ocean, occupy a prominent place.

The Doñana National Park has deeply rooted traditions that have become true attractions. The pilgrimage in honor of the Virgin of Rocío attracts thousands of people every year who, on foot or on horseback, cover a long distance to reach the village. On Pentecost Sunday morning, they jump “the railing” and carry the virgin on their shoulders. The feeling of this festival has crossed borders, making El Rocío a reference point for visitors to the park. Also, walking through its streets is a unique experience, as it can be considered one of the most peculiar and picturesque villages in Europe, with its unpaved streets full of earth seemingly transporting us to the Wild West.

The Iberian lynx is undoubtedly the star of this paradise in southern Europe. The world’s most endangered feline has one of its largest populations here, with around 90 individuals. Having the luck to see it crouched, waiting for the passage of some prey to hunt, or simply seeing it walk on the park’s sands, is a privilege that few people in the world have had and makes Doñana even more unique in the world.
