Gibraltar was the end of the known world for the Greeks; according to mythology, Hercules was the first to venture beyond the waters of the Mediterranean Sea, flanking the line formed by Mount Calpe (Rock of Gibraltar) and Mount Musa in Africa, to reach Tartessos and steal the oxen from King Geryon.

Today, The Rock, as it is popularly known, is the refuge of the only colony of monkeys in freedom living on European soil, a major tourist attraction in the area. March and September are perhaps the months with the highest number of birds. In the waters of the Strait, more than 15 different species of cetaceans can be spotted, including orcas, common rorquals, and bottlenose dolphins.
