White Villages & Ronda

Being located halfway between the provinces of Cadiz and Malaga, the Sierra de Grazalema Natural Park integrates coexistence between human habitat and nature conservation. Its special climatic and geological conditions are responsable for the coexistence of unique plant and animal species in this space, such as the Pinsapo. One of the largest colonies of vultures in Europe can also be found in these lands.

Due to the composition of limestone of the mountains, we can see countless karst formations, some of incalculable value and interest, such as the complex of caves Hundidero- Gato, with a length of more than 5 km; the Garganta Verde, which is a narrow and deep gorge; and the Pileta Cave, which is famous for having the largest collection of Paleolithic cave art in the Mediterranean and the largest schematic art representation in cave in Europe, with more than 3000 performances.

The so-called White Villages consist of 14 small towns hung in the mountains of the Natural Park that have kept the charm of the mountain villages in their streets because of its traditional architecture of whitewashed walls and gabled roofs. They are places full of peace and quiet to enjoy the customs and traditions that seem not to get lost in these corners.

The origin of these houses has can be found in the Muslim period, when these mountains marked the border between the Moorish kingdom of Granada and the Christian kingdom of Castile. That is why its urbanism is marked by narrow streets and an apparent random layout.

Zahara de la Sierra, Grazalema and Ronda are well worth a visit since you will be able to enjoy a peaceful walk and will have the chance to know their customs and traditions, as well as their old and historical buildings, which are the reflection of it gold past full of traces of Phoenicians, Romans, Visigoths, Arabs and Castilians.

In Ronda, perhaps the most famous of all of them, you must explore its Alameda until the impressive Tajo, which stands out as the city balcony where we also find the famous New Bridge. This construction was built in the eighteenth century, and is nowadays the greatest attraction and the main symbol of the city together with the Maestranza Bullring.
