Riotinto is undoubtedly one of the most peculiar and different areas not only in Andalusia, but throughout the world. Much it is so, that even NASA has studied it landscape because of the similarity it keeps with the planet Mars, due to the identical chemical composition of it ground, which is rich in metallic minerals and stains red the river witch runs through them: the Tinto River.
The natural and artificial mineral washing, which is the result of mining that has been developed in the area since Romans and Muslims times, has resulted in a characteristic landscape whose vision by the population has also varied in history, being even considered a damned river.
However, now its vision is very different as it was declared a Protected Landscape in 2005 by the Government of Andalusia, not only to protect the natural heritage but also the cultural one, which is what has made possible this unique landscape.
